How it all started...
In June of 2001 pastors Shannon and Nancy Schreyer became the leaders of Church on the Terrace which at the time was a nearly 10 year old Assemblies of God church plant that was led by pastors Steve and Cherri Pike. In the fall of 2000, Steve was asked to lead a new church planting initiative for the Rocky Mountain Ministry Network and after several months the Schreyer's were selected by the congregation to lead the church.
In 2003 the congregation changed the name of the church to God's Place as the result of a prophetic encounter that Pastor Shannon experienced while praying over the city. In that encounter Pastor Shannon was praying over the city from a high place and as he was praying an open vision occurred where a dark cloud bank moved in over the whole city. Then in the middle of the city a spinning vortex began to open creating an opening in the clouds. Suddenly a shaft of light came down from heaven, (in slow motion) and touched the city floor. When it did, Pastor Shannon said he saw what looked like a ladder coming down out of heaven and then thousands of angels that began to traffic from heaven to earth and then from earth to heaven through this open spiritual portal. Then with out any fanfare or announcement the ladder that he saw retracted back into to heaven and the whole vision came to a close. Immediately Pastor Shannon said he was drawn to the Old Testament passage in Genesis 28: 10-17 where Jacob had a dream and saw the angels of heaven ascending and descending from heaven to earth on a ladder.
Jacob says that we he woke up from the dream he thought, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.” He was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven.” From here the biblical texts says that Jacob name that place, "Bethel" which translates into "the place of God".
Pastor Shannon said in that moment he felt like the Lord was asking him to change the name of the church to reflect what is was that God was wanting to do in the region.
